Unlikely Truce

What am I reading now?  Going Rogue (Robin Benway)
Annnd. . . what do I think so far?  This is the second in there series. (Honestly, I liked the first one better. This one was slow starting, but the second half was great.)

Being permanently based in a local New York City high school as an undercover operative has its moments, good and bad, for 16-year-old safecracker Maggie Silver. Pros: More quality time with her former mark-turned-boyfriend Jesse Oliver and insanely cool best friend, Roux. Getting to spend quality time with her semi-retired and international spy honorary uncle, Angelo. Cons: High school and the accompanying cliques, bad lunches, and frustratingly simple locker combinations. But when Maggie's parents are falsely accused of stealing priceless gold coins, Maggie uses her safecracking skills to try and clear their names. Too bad it only serves to bring the wrath of the now corrupt Collective down on all of them. Can Maggie and her "new team" defeat their former allies?

Smoke and ash blew past the hole that passed for a window. “Let me out!” the prisoner called from inside the tiny cell. The sound of the roof crashing on the floor above testified fire was engulfing the prison.

When the door finally opened, support timbers fell, breaking the guard’s leg.

Manacles locked the prisoner’s ankles to the wall. Crawling across the floor, he thrust his hand toward the guard’s. “Give me the key.” The guard measured the pirate before him, supposedly one in league with Satan himself. “Surely the king wants to kill me himself.”

Reluctantly, he handed over the key.

I like it! I'm wondering if the pirate will help the guard, or leave him in the fire. I would love to know what happens next!

Poor pirate. I too wonder what he will do next. Beyond escaping the flames.

ah, I hope he saves the guard. I was totally picturing Captain Jack Sparrow. ;) He'd save the guard.
