Writing Tip: The First Five Pages. . .
Advice given at Storymakers 2010 from Krista Marino of Delacourt Press.
• Amazing first sentence
• Start in the middle of action
• Don't tell too much, readers need questions to move on
• Save physical descriptions of characters until later, work them in where they matter
• Avoid starting with a dream, alarm clock or the weather (see too many of these, your story won't stand out)
• Clean grammar, spelling and punctuation
